Blooming While Abiding: What the Weeping Bottlebrush Taught Me About God’s Love This Valentine’s Day

Blooming While Abiding: What the Weeping Bottlebrush Taught Me About God’s Love This Valentine’s Day

Right outside my window stands a weeping bottlebrush tree—delicate, vibrant, and quietly faithful. A week ago, during a colder stretch, it held only a small red bloom. Nothing about the weather looked like a blooming season. Honestly, nothing about my life felt like one either. It has been a stretching season, a pruning season, a growing season.

But this week I looked again.

The same tree is now covered in red blossoms.

The weeping bottlebrush is known for thriving in tough conditions. It can endure heat, wind, and sudden changes in weather. Its branches bend downward in a gentle “weeping” form, yet from those very branches burst bright red blooms that look like brushes full of life. It doesn’t rush. It doesn’t force growth. It simply stays rooted and, in the right time, it blooms.

Immediately, John 15:5 came to my heart: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.”

The branch doesn’t strain to produce fruit. It abides. It stays connected. And fruit appears in its season.

This Valentine’s Day, while the world celebrates love in many ways, I felt God show His love through a tree outside my window. A quiet reminder that even in rough seasons, He is near. Even in pruning, He is loving. Even when growth feels slow or hidden, He is working.

The weeping bottlebrush reminded me that:

  • Growth can happen in cold seasons
  • - Beauty can emerge after pruning
  •  - Strength and gentleness can exist together
  •  - Remaining connected to God always leads to life

Its weeping branches made me think of surrender. Its bright red blooms felt like love made visible. And its sudden fullness after a quiet week felt like confirmation: God’s love is steady, present, and personal.

Sometimes He places reminders right outside our window so we can see them daily. If we remain in Him, we will bloom. Not by force. Not by striving. But by staying connected.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for loving me through every season—especially the ones that stretch and grow me. Thank You for the reminder that I don’t have to force fruit in my life; I only need to remain in You. Just like the branches of the weeping bottlebrush, help me stay rooted, connected, and at peace in Your presence. Let Your love bloom in my life in its perfect timing. On this Valentine’s Day, remind me that Your love is constant, gentle, and always near. May my life bear fruit that reflects Your goodness and Your heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
